كان إمام مغنيا يملك صوتا ممتلئا بعناصر الطرب كلها، وكان يعمل نجارا في ورشة صغيرة، يملكها في أحد الأحياء البعيدة. كان يدق مسمارا أو مسمارين في الصباح على طاولة أو كرسي، أو خزانة، وينفق باقي اليوم في تلحين القصائد التي تناثرت داخل الورشة. وكان مألوفا جدا أن ترى عددا من زبائنه، يسألون بغضب عن أغراضهم التي مضى عليها زمن طويل وما زالت مجرد خشب. في أحد الأيام زرته في ورشته، أعطيته قصيدة كتبتُها لفتاة جميلة وأرادت أن تسمعها مغناة، فطلب مني أن أحضر شايا من مقهى قريب وأعود، وحين عدت بعد عدة دقائق، كان يسمعني قصيدتي ملحنة بصورة لم أصدقها، وفي يوم آخر زودته بخامات الخشب، وطلبت منه طاولة جديدة لعيادتي التي سأفتتحها قريبا، فلم أستلم تلك الطاولة قط.
