وتعيد المؤلّفة، سارة إرفنج في كتابها اكتشاف الصورة، الأيقونية للفتاة الفلسطينيّة المُتشحة بالكوفيّة، وهي تستند الى بندقيتها متحاشية النظر إلى المصورين، وهي الصورة التي تصدّرت وسائل الإعلام الغربيّة بعد أن نفّذت ليلى وزميلها عملية جريئة لخطف الطائرات عام 1969 تحت قيادة الجبهة الشعبيّة لتحرير فلسطين، بهدف لفت الأنظار إلى عدالة القضيّة الفلسطينيّة بالدرجة الأولى، ومن ثم مقايضة الرّكاب الرّهائن بعدد من الأسرى الفلسطينيين الذين كانوا محتجزين في السجون الإسرائيليّة في ذلك الوقت.
