وليد خالدي (1925 - ) هو مؤرخ فلسطيني كتب بغزارة عن اللجوء الفلسطيني وحرب 1948. كما أنه أحد مؤسسي مؤسسة الدراسات الفلسطينية، ويشغل منصب السكرتير العام فيها. ولد الخالدي في القدس وتخرج من جامعة أوكسفورد في 1951. وقد عمل محاضراً في الدراسات السياسية في الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت حتى عام 1982، ومن ثم باحث في مركز هارفارد للشؤون الدولية. كما حاضر في جامعة برنستون وجامعة أوكسفورد، وهو زميل في الأكاديمية الأمريكية للآداب والعلوم.

يشكل هذا الكتاب في مجمله مرجعاً وثائقياً لا مثيل له لكفاح الشعب الفلسطيني وحياته اليومية طوال سبعين عاماً من تاريخه الحديث قبل شتاته، وسجلاً لذاكرته التاريخية. ينقسم الكتاب إلى خمسة أقسام هي: أولاً أيام الحكم العثماني الأخيرة (1876-1918)، ثانياً، من الاحتلال البريطاني إلى الثورة الفلسطينية الكبرى (1918-1935)، ثالثاً، الثورة الكبرى (1936-1939)، رابعاً، من مؤتمر لندن إلى توصية هيئة الأمم بتقسيم فلسطين (1939-1947). ويتضمن كل قسم من هذه الأقسام الخمسة، مقدمة وصفية تحليلية، يتبعها تسلسل زمني لأحداث الفترة التي يغطيها القسم، تم إعداده استناداً إلى المصادر العربية والعبرية والإنكليزية، ثم تعليقات دقيقة على كل صورة من الصور المنشورة التي حفل بها هذا الكتاب حيث تم اختيار حوالي الـ 5000 صورة من آلاف الصور الموزعة في مجموعات خاصة وعامة، في الشتات الفلسطيني، وفي كل من بريطانيات والولايات المتحدة. وتغطي هذه الصور كل نواحي الحياة الفلسطينية قبل سنة 1948 في الريف وفي المدن، ويرافق النص ست خرائط ملونة، ترصد تطور حركة الاستيطان الاستعماري الصهيوني منذ بداياته الأولى.
قبل الشتات عبارة عن رحلة مرئية (visual) في الحياة في فلسطين قبل تقسيمها سنة 1948. كل جانب مهم من التاريخ الفلسطيني الحديث يصبح نابضاً بالحياة في نحو 500 صورة اختيرت بعناية من آلاف الصور التي تم الحصول عليها من مجموعات شخصية وعامة في مختلف أنحاء العالم. لكن ما يوازي أهمية الصور المتضمنة في هذا المجلد الأنيق هو النصوص الوصفية-التحليلية، التي كتبها أبرز مؤرخي فترة 1948، والتي تقدّم لكل من الحقب التاريخية الخمس التي يغطيها هذا الكتاب. ويكمل هذه النظرة العامة كرونولوجيا تفصيلية لكل حقبة تستند إلى مصادر عبرية وعربية وإنكليزية. كما يتضمن الكتاب شروحاً مرفقة بالصور، مستندة إلى بحث دقيق، وغنية بالمعلومات، تتتبع التطورات السياسية والاجتماعية والعسكرية التي أدت إلى الذروة المأساوية في سنة 1948.
