تمثل الفنون القديمة في بلاد الرافدين الذي يدور حوله البحث في هذا الكتاب طرازاً فنياً يعد من أقدم الطرز في العصور التاريخية، بل إنه في حقيقة الأمر يتنافس على الصدارة مع الطراز الفني في وادي النيل من حيث القدم والأصالة. ويتضح في هذا الطراز اثر المجتمع حيث كان رعاة الفن فيه بصفة خاصة من الكهنة والملوك، ولذلك كان الفن في خدمة هذا النظام الديني الرسمي، ومن ثم صار يتميز بطباع الوقار والفخامة وذات قواعد ثابتة شبه مقدسة بحيث طغى هذا الأثر الاجتماعي على شخصية الفنان الذي استعاض عن التجديد بالدقة الصناعية والمهارة الحرفية، والطراز الفني العرقي العام ينقسم إلى طرز فرعية أهمها: الطراز السومري، والطراز الأكدي البابلي، والطراز الآشوري والكلداني أو البابلي الجديد. وقد تبادلت هذه الطرز التأثيرات مع الطرز المصرية القديمة، وكان لها أثرها في تكوين فنون أخرى مثل الفن الحثّي في آسيا الصغرى، والفن الاغريقي في بلاد اليونان. وخلف الفن العراقي آثاراً رائعة في شتى المجالات، من تخطيط مدن، وعمارة، ونحت، وتصوير، وفنون تطبيقية، هذه المواضيع وغيرها تمّ شرحها في فصول هذا الكتاب بأسلوب نظري مرفق بالصور الفوتوغرافية كافة الفنون القديمة في بلاد الرافدين التي انبعثت منها أنوار الهداية والتوحيد منذ ابراهيم الخليل، في تشكيل فنون العالم على مدى الأزمان.
