من بين الحضارات القديمة برزت حضارة وادي الرافدين بآثارها الفنية ومكتشفاتها المتميزة، في مجالات عدة (كالزراعة والري والكتابة والقوانين والعمارة والفنون الجميلة)، وعدت على أنها الشواهد الحقيقية على تطور وتقدم الإنسان الرافديني في مضمار الحضارة.
وكشفت عن أولى معالم التطور البشري قبل أكثر من (10000 سنة ق.م.) ومنها ما عرف بالنتاجات النفية لمستوطنة (نمريك) التي يرجع تاريخها إلى العصر الحجري الحديث بحدود (الالف الثامن ق.م.)، حيث اكتشفت البعثة الأثارية البولونية برئاسة البروفيسور كوسلويسكي في (عام 19859 لقى نحتية لطائر (الكركي - الكرك) تعود لهذا المستوطنة في شمال مدينة الموصل بالقرب من ناحية فايدة، وتعد من أقدم الإبداعات التشكيلية التي تم إكتشافها للنحت الرافديني القديم، وهي تمثل تماثيل من الحصى الصلب نحتت بأسلوب مبسط فيه من الإختزال ما يوحي للمتلقي أن مبدع هذه المنحوتات قد نحتها بأسلوب وكأنها إبداع فنان حديث معاصر (شكل 1).
إن فضل هذه الحضارات ذات القيم النبيلة والعظيمة كبير على التطور الإنساني والحضاري للأمم الأخرى، منذ إن بدءت تحبو وتسير سيراً بنائياً في وادي يحتضن نهرين خالدين (دجلة - دكلاتم، ادكنا Idigna، والفرات - بوراتي، بوراتم Purati Puratum - باللغة الأكدية والبابلية القديمة)، الأمر الذي جعله ملاذا لأقوام سكنته هم من أصل البلاد، ترجع أصولها إلى إنسان نياندرتال الذي سكن الكهوف في شمال وادي الرافدين مثل (كهف برده بلكة، وهزارمرد، وشانيدار) في مرحلة جميع القود والصيد، ثم استطانها في القرى الزراعية البدائية التي تكونت بجوار الجداول والأنهار مثل (قرية ملفعات، وجرمو، وكريم شهر، ولطارة، وتل حسونه وتل حلف... إلى آخره) في مرحلة إنتاج القوت والزراعة، ثم ظهور حضارة العبيد في (الألف الخامس ق. م) ثم الحضارة السومرية في (الألف الثالث ق. م) وأقوام أخرى جاءت إليه من أماكن مجاورة ومن نفس الأرض الطبية.
