تطور الصورة الفنية في الشعر العربي الحديث كتاب ظهر إلى وجود أول مرة سنة 1983 عن الاتجاد الكتاب العرب وسرعان ما نفذ. في هذا الكتاب تلامحت دراسة الصورة الفنية عند الناقد الدكتور (نعيم اليافي) بشكلها الحديث. ودراسة الصورة الفنية عند مافدنا دراسة رائدة تحتل المكانة البارزة بين الدراسات النقدية الحديثة. أما أسلوبه في التعامل مع النص فهو تحديد دراسته بإطار زماني هو العصر الحديث، والشعر الذي كتب فيه بفتراته الثلاث (التقليدية، رومانسية، حرة)، وإطار مكاني هو جمهورية مصر العربية من خلال شعراء أعلام يمثلون الفترات المذكورة.
ويختار اليافي لدراسته المنهج الانتقائي التكاملي، ينطلق فيه من الدلالة الفنية البلاغية لمصطلح صورة، مستفيداً من شتى الطرائق والنظريات ولا تقتصر الدراسة على صورة محددة من فترة ما، وإنما تتناول طبيعة الصورة، وتطورها ينبع من طبيعة الفترة التي تشكلت خلالها، نظراً لارتباط الشاعر بما حوله من أحداث، ولتأثره بنظرية الجمال السائدة، حسب وجهة نظره، فلكل عصر ذوق جمالي خاص يحكم أفراده، كما يطوع المفهومات النظرية عند التطبيق، فتتجاوز حدودها إلى مدى الدلالات المتاحة.
ويستعمل الناقد مصطلح الصورة المترجم عن الإنكليزية، ولكنه لا يعتمد المعنى الحرفي له، وإنما يتناول جوانب مختلفة وغنية للمصطلح, فهو يرى أن الدلالة العامة لأي مصطلح خارج نصه تساوي الصفر الفني، أما الدلالة الخاصة به داخل نصه فتساوي القيمة المحددة التي استخدم من أجلها، والبعد الزماني للمصطلح هو الجوء الديناميكي -الحركي الذي يمنح المصطلح مرونته، ويجعله قابلاً للديمومة المتحركة من وجهة النظر النقدية.
في هذا الكتاب نجد النماذج التطبيقية التي رافقت التنظير في دراسة الناقد، جاءت مناسبة في نسق يوفق بين الموقف والموقع، فهو لا يجزئ موقف الشاعر (الشعري)، وإنما يحافظ على تواصله النسقي في خط يشبك البداية والنهاية. كتاب تأسيسي لا يمكن للدارسين الاستغناء عنه، ويتضح فيه المنهج العلمي للباحث الرصين.
تلبي هذه الدراسة حاجة الشعر العربي بحيث تقترب إليه من داخله عبر ربطه بقاعدة فلسفية للعصر أولاً وبنظرية فنية ثانياً ثم تنطلق إلى دراسته دراسة بنائية، ضمن محور رئيس تدور حوله وهو الوضع الغالب للصورة الذي يهدف إلى دراسة أنماطها المسيطرة في كل فترة على حدة وهي التقليدية والرومانسية المعاصرة.
