وتجلّت هذه الحركة في أدب عربي ملتزم على مستوى القَصص والشعر والنقد الأدبي والمسرح وسائر الفنون الأدبية، وفي مجلات أدبية وفكرية تشرح الإلتزام وتناقشه وتدعو إليه، وتنشر مبادئه، وتدافع عنه، وتعرض منه ألواناً شعرية ونثرية، وتقدم حولها الدراسات النقدية، كمجلة الآداب، ومجلة الطريق، والثقافة الوطنية، ومواقف، والمعرفة وسواها.
هذه الظاهرة، أثارت إهتمام المؤلف ليوضع في هذا الكتاب دراسة منهجية حول أدب الإلتزام عند العرب، ترصده، وتتقصاه، وتبحث في أصوله ونواميسه وأسسه وعوامله وظروفه وأطواره، وإرتباطه بالحياة العربية، ومدى تأثّره بها وتأثيره فيها، ومدى ما ينطوي عليه من تأثّر بالآداب الأجنبية وأحداث العالم.
