لقد افتضحت الممارسات الشائنة على مدى التاريخ للكنيسة الكاثوليكية، في الوقت الذي كان يسعى فيه بطل رواية شيفرة دافنشي: الأستاذ في جامعة هارفارد روبرت لانغدون، وراء الكأس المقدسة. بالإضافة إلى أنها ولّدت نظريات مؤامرة، لا حصر لها عند القرّاء حول العالم، الذين أثارهم المزيج من العرض المبهر والتاريخ المزيّف والرمزية الخفية.
وقد تضاعف هذا الميل بشكل كبير عندما قال براون بشكل مشوّق في مقابلة له: إن العمل كان مبنياً على الحقيقة والخيال، على حدّ سواء. يوجد مدرستان من المعتقدات التي تتحدث عن الماسونية: الأولى تقول: إن الماسونيين هم مفارقة تاريخية حديثة، غريبو الأطوار، ويشكّلون تنظيماً غير خطير جوهرياً، من رجالٍ لا يعتبرون أن إحساسهم المكتمل بأهمية الذات هو عيب، إذا ما قُورن مع الأعمال الخيرية الحسنة والعديدة التي يقومون بها. ويفضي هذا الرأي إلى أنه من غير المرجّح للأخوية أن تستمر بأي شكلٍ كان لفترة تتجاوز عقدين أو ثلاثة عقود، وذلك نظراً لزيادة متوسط العمر للحصول على العضوية.
ما هي الماسونية؟ وصفت الماسونية مراراً وتكراراً على أنها: "نظام كنسي أخلاقي، استتر في رمز، وتوضّح في رموز". إلا أنها تبقى أكبر مجتمع أخوي علماني، مشهور بسمعته السيئة في العالم. ويقول البعض إن سلالتها تعود إلى زمن الملك سليمان، بينما هو معروف أن أصولها تنحدر من نقابات المعماريين في العصور الوسطى، كما سنشرح بالتفصيل في الفصل الأول "التاريخ الحقيقي للماسونية"؛ وهذا الادعاء واهٍ إلى حدّ كبير، وهو ما سوف نقوم بتفحّصه بعمق لاحقاً في هذا الكتاب.
