ان الجمعيات السرية قد نشأت وتطورت في الشرق، لأن الشرق كان مهدا للحضارات القديمة وموطنا للأديان. فالحضارات القديمة، كالحضارة المصرية، والبابلية، والآشورية والفينيقية والكلدانية قد نشأت في الشرق، والأديان العالمية ((اليهودية والمسيحية والإسلام)) كان مهدها الشرق أيضا، ولا تخفى على الباحث المتعمق في فلسفة الأديان وتاريخ الحضارات العلاقة الوثيقة بين تاريخ الجمعيات السرية وبين تأريخ الأديان والحضارات. وان هذه الجمعيات السرية القديمة تنقسم إلى قسمين: القسم الأول: جمعيات سرية دينية تهدف إلى الاتصال بعالم الغيب والوقوف على أسرار الكون وخفاياه. القسم الثاني: جمعيات سرية دنيوية تهدف إلى الانقلابات السياسية وتسعى لاحلال سلطة مكان سلطة. وكان لكهنة مصر الأقدمين مبادئ وتعاليم يتناقلونها فيما بينهم، ولا يسمحون لغيرهم بالاطلاع عليها. لاعتقادهم، أن العامة ادنى من أن يفهموا أسرار الحياة وخفايا الكون، وهذه التعاليم السرية المصرية، قد نقلها الفيلسوف اليوناني فيثاغورس الى بلاده واصطبغت هنالك بصبغة فلسفية، الا انها لم تكن في متناول العامة بل كانت وقفا على الفلاسفة وتلاميذهم النابهين من ذوي الحكمة والدراية. فتطورت مفاهيم الذين اعتنقوا هذه التعاليم فأخذوا يعنون بالشؤون العامة، كنقد النظم القائمة في المجتمع والدولة فبذلك اتخذت هذه التعاليم شكل الجمعيات السياسية السرية. وعلى غرار ما أسسه فيثاغورس، أسست جمعيات سرية غربية، قد تكون جمعية (البنائين الأحرار) ((الماسونية)) احدى هذه الجمعيات القديمة.
