في كتابه "أسرار الماسونية" يكشف الدكتور حكمت المرَ عن حقيقة ظاهرة "الماسونية" في العالم والتي تحمل في عمقها حقائق مختلفة عن المفهوم الشائع لها. فالماسونية –بحسب المؤلف- سعت إلى المساهمة في بناء الهيكل الكبير لصقل روحية الإنسانية، وفي بناء المدينة الفضلى حيث التقرب من الكمال.
فما هي الماسونية وأصلها ونشأتها وحركتها وتياراتها ومن هم القائلين بها وما هو مضمونها.. كل تلك الأمور نجد الإجابة عليها في هذا الكتاب.
وعليه سواء أكان القارئ من الماسون أو لم يكن لا بد من الاعتراف أنها تمثل تياراً فكرياً في كل المجتمعات. وبعد عدة قرون بشرت بها الماسونية بالأخوة والمساواة والحرية في المجتمع. وهي قيم الماسونية القديمة التي حاولت الوصول بالإنسان إلى الأفضل؛ نجدها اليوم تعبيراً عن تيارات فكرية متناقضة ومعاكسة أحياناً وهو النتيجة الطبيعية لتنوع الفكر البشري المنظور الذي ينزع دائماً إلى التغيير.
قسَم الكتاب إلى قسمين: القسم الأول (الماسونية العملية) ويبحث في نشوء الماسونية العملية وأصولها الميثولوجية وجمعياتها السرية والمراحل التاريخية لها في الزمن القديم حتى القرون الوسطى. أما القسم الثاني فيتحدث عن (الماسونية الحديثة او الرمزية) نشوءها في أوروبا واستقلالها عن المحافل البريطانية وتنوع أفكارها في فرنسا ونيويورك وغيرها من بلدان العالم، وأخيراً (الماسونية الرمزية في الشرق): في مصر وسوريا ولبنان وبلدان عربية أخرى ويختتم الكتاب بملحق (صور لرموز الماسونية).
