استرد أفلاطون حريته التي كانت على وشك الضياع وكان أول قرار قد اتخذه بعد فك عبوديته هو العودة سريعاً إلى مدينته أثينا، وهناك أسس فيها أكاديميته الفلسفية، وكان الغرض الأساسي لأفلاطون من تأسيسه لتلك الأكاديمية هو إعداد طبقة من الفلاسفة القادرين على نشر النظريات الاجتماعية والسياسية في كل أرجاء البلاد، وللدلاله على مدى أهمية تلك الأكاديمية ليس في حياة أفلاطون أو أثينا القديمة فحسب، إن أهميتها هيمنت على حياة الفكر الأوروبي بشكل عام، حيث ظلت تمارس مهام عملها الفكري والفلسفي على مدار أكثر من عشرة قرون.
وجدير بالذكر أن أفلاطون كان يقوم بإلقاء محاضرات خاصة لطلبه الأكاديمية بالإضافة إلى المؤلفات التي كان يكتبها للعامة من الناس، وتعتبر محاورة الجمهورية - وهي من المؤلفات التي كتبها أفلاطون للعامة - فإنها تعد في الحقيقة من أهم ما كتبه أفلاطون نظراً لما احتوته من نظريات مختلفة ارتبطت ببعضها البعض في منظومة متناغمة من اجل تكوين نظرة عامة لحياة الإنسان والمجتمع وبحيث تكون تلك النظرة ذات أثر في وصول المجتمع إلى مرحلة العادالة طبقاً لمنظور ورؤيه أفلاطون، وللدلاله على مدى أهمية ما كتبه أفلاطون في الجمهورية أن أثرها تغلغل كثيراً في وجدان الفكر الأوروبي وأبرز مثال على ذلك هو ما كتبه شبشرون وأيضاً امتد أثر كتاب الجمهورية الى الفكر الإسلامي، حيث ظهر أثرها في كتاب الفارابي الشهير المدينة الفاضلة.
