"الجمهورية" كتابٌ تأسيسي في مسائل كثيرة، يأتي على شكل سلسلة من المحاورات يطرح فيها المتحاورون نظريات حول العدالة وكيف يمكن لتلك النظريات أن تصبح واقعاً ضمن البنية السياسية لمدينة ما.
وفي سياق المحاورة حول العدالة يخوض أفلاطون في نطاقٍ أوسع من الأسئلة في مجالات الأخلاق والسياسة وحتى في طبيعة الوجود نفسها.
هذا الكتاب الذي كُتب قبل 2500 عام تقريباً، لا يزال تأثيره حاضراً، ويعتبره الكثيرون أهم كتب أفلاطون، وكان له أهم الأثر في نشوء وتطور الفلسفة السياسية.
وُلد أفلاطون حوالي عام 429 وتوفي عام 347 ق. م، في أثينا ويعتبر أهم الفلاسفة المؤثرين في التقاليد الغربية للفلسفة السياسية، وهو مؤسس "الأكاديمية"، أهم وأشهر مراكز التعليم خارج أثينا.
