لأول مرة في تاريخه يظهر العلم في صورتين متناقضتين إلى هذا الحد: ففي الصورة الأولى تبرز العملية الحضارية وقد ارتبطت بتطوّر العلم وبإنجازاته، وفي الصورة الثانية تبدو نتائج العلم مثيرة للقلق الاجتماعي والأخلاقي خوفاً "من أن يكون سبباً" للإضرار بالحياة على كوكب الارض... ومن جديد تتسابق الأسئلة والتساؤلات: ما هو العلم؟ كيف، متى ولماذا ولد؟ كيف تطوّر؟ هل نشأ بقرار أم كان نشوؤه ضرورة تاريخية، وهل سيبقى الى الابد؟ هل هو من نتاج الفرد أم من نتاج الجماعة؟ هل هو حقل معرفي منفصل أم جزء من معرفة الانسان وجزء من نظامه المعرفي المتكامل؟ هل هو مستقل عن الفن والأدب وسائر فروع المعرفة أم هو جزء لا يتجزأ من نتاج العقل الانساني ومن النشاط الحياتي الاجتماعي؟ وهل يقوى الانسان على الحياة بدونه؟ هل بلغ ذروته أم ما زال يتطوّر؟ ما هو مداه وما هو مصيره؟. هذا الكتاب ليس تاريخاً للعلم، أو وثيقة لولادته، بل فيه تاريخ مبسّط لظهور الأفكار العلمية وتطوّر مفهوم العلم، وهو يرسم الخط البياني للفكر العلمي بدءاً بمغامرات العقل الأولى ووصولاً إلى أفكار العلوم "ما بعد الحديثة" مروراً بتعرّجات الماضي التي شهدت ضمور العلم في عصور الانحطاط وتألّقه في حقبات الثورات العلمية.
وفي هذا الكتاب محاولة لترسيم الحدود بين المعارف العلمية والمعارف غير العلمية وفيه تذكير بمبادئ العلم ومعاييره، بوظائفه ولغته وضوابطه ووسائل التحقق من نتائجه وفيه أيضاً إبراز للّوحات التي رسمها العلم للعالم، وشَرْحٌ لها.
