تجري الرواية في باريس الخمسينيات. تعج المدينة بالمغتربين والعلاقات المحرمة والعنف الخفي، فيزورها ديفيد الأمريكي ليقف عاجزاً عن قمع نوازعه رغم معرفته بخطورتها وآثارها القاتلة. إذ بعد أن قابل فتاة أحبها وعرض عليها الزواج، يصادف عامل حانة إيطالي، جيوفاني، ذا الفلسفة والرؤية المختلفتين تماماً عن الأفكار الأمريكية المتفائلة التي يحفظها ديفيد عن ظهر قلب، فتتغير حياته.
