تجري الأحداث خلال يوم ميلاد المراهق جون، يوم سبت من عام 1935، حين يصحو صباحاً فيجد صدره وقد ثقل فجأة مما اقترف من خطايا، ضميره الديني يؤنبه، فيشرع في التساؤل عن هويته الدينية والجنسبة والاجتماعية والعرقية، وعن حقيقة مشاعره ومن هو في هذه الحياة، وفي الحياة الآخرة. ينتقل السرد في الزمن ماضياً وحاضراً ليشكل صورة متكاملة عن جون نفسه من خلال ذاكره عمته، ووالدته، ووالده. يقف كل واحد منهم في الكنيسة للصلاة، فينفتح السرد من القلب تماماً، تتدفق الأيام أمام الرب وتنسكب الاعترافات والشكوك ويختل ميزان الزمن. كل ذلك دينية تختلف باختلاف الشخصيات: تثقل وتغدو توراثية (العهد القديم) على لسان الأب، وتخف وتتجدد فتمسي إنجيلية (العهد الجديد) على لسان الصبي.
