يقول جيمس ريموند ولستد الرحّالة الذي زار عمان في الفترة 1835–1836، إنه وضع في كتابه ذي الجزأين: "رحلات في شبه الجزيرة العربية"، أبحاثاً عن أرجاء واسعة من شبه الجزيرة العربية يفتقر إليها الأوروبيون من رجال عصره، برغم حيويتها لأهدافهم. وعبّر الكاتب عن أمله بأن يثير كتابه اهتمام الفلاسفة والمشتغلين بعلوم البيئة والجغرافيا والعلوم الإنسانية الأخرى.
ونحن إذ نضع بين يدي القارئ ه يقول جيمس ريموند ولستد الرحّالة الذي زار عمان في الفترة 1835–1836، إنه وضع في كتابه ذي الجزأين: "رحلات في شبه الجزيرة العربية"، أبحاثاً عن أرجاء واسعة من شبه الجزيرة العربية يفتقر إليها الأوروبيون من رجال عصره، برغم حيويتها لأهدافهم. وعبّر الكاتب عن أمله بأن يثير كتابه اهتمام الفلاسفة والمشتغلين بعلوم البيئة والجغرافيا والعلوم الإنسانية الأخرى.
ونحن إذ نضع بين يدي القارئ هذه الترجمة العربية للقسم الخاص بعُمان الذي أورده ولستد في الجزء الثاني من كتابه، نشير إلى أنه كان أول رحالة غربي يشق طريقه بعزم ثابت وعين فاحصة وذهن متقد إلى عمان الداخلية، وساق لنا من أخبارها ما لم يزد عليه اللاحقون من الرحالة إلا قليلاً. وقد تحقق أمل الكاتب في إثارة اهتمام أهل العلم والسياسة من الأوروبيين في عصره، كما ظفر بعد ذلك باحترام المؤرخين والفلكلوريين المحدثين الذين أدركوا أنهم لن يفلحوا في معالجة فروع الدراسات الإنسانية الخاصة بعُمان في النصف الأول من القرن التاسع عشر إلا بعد الرجوع إليه، فهو العمدة في مجاله.
