لا يكتفي هذا الكتاب يرصد التحولات السياسية الكبرى التي امتدت على مختلف العصور، بل يتميز لهذا الكتاب عن سواه من المؤلفات التي تتناول التاريخ العربي في العصر الوسيط، أنه يحاول رؤية هذه المرحلة إجمالاً، ولذلك عمد المؤلف إلى الإنطلاق من تاريخ العرب قبل الإسلام وانتهى إلى المرحلة العثمانية، وما شهدته العديد من الأقطار العربية من حداثة، جاءت في أعقاب التغلغل الأوروبي في أجزائها.
