إن الفضل من هذا الكتاب يعود إلى الملك فردريك الخامس-ملك الدنمارك الذي امر بإرسال بعثة علمية لتقديم تقرير علمي واجتماعي شامل عن الجزيرة العربية فتم اختيار خمسة إن أهمية رحلة العالم كارستن نيبور تنبع من كونه من أقدم الرحالة الأوروبيين الذين جالوا في بلادنا العربية، فظلا عن كونه شاهد عيان لمرحلة من التاريخ العربي حيث قدم وصفا تفصيليا لجغرافيا وتاريخ مجتمعات العرب قبل ٢٥٠ سنة.

وبالرغم من أن الموت قضى على ٤ من أعضاء البعثة، تابع نيبور رحلته في الجزيرة العربية وبعد عودته وحيدا إلى وطنه دوّن مشاهداته.
المجلد الاول: وصف أقاليم شبه الجزيرة العربية واشتمل على وصف كامل للجزيرة العربية وأسماء مدنها وقراها في نجد والحجاز وشبه جزيرة سيناء.
المجلد الثاني: رحلات إلى شبه الجزيرةوالعزبية وبلدان أخرى مجاورة لها وقد نشرته مؤسسة الانتشار العربية.
