نیمه دومِ قرن سیزدهم میلادی: امپراتوری بزرگ مغول در حال فروپاشی است. همزمان با جنگهای داخلی خانهای مغول، ویلهلم آگسبورگی راهب فرقه دومنیکن و ژوسران سارازینی شوالیه فرقه دلاوران معبد سفری دراز را به سوی قراقوروم آغاز میکنند تا به نمایندگی از سوی پاپ و شاهان صلیبی، قوبیلای قاآن خانِ بزرگ مغول را به عقد پیمان علیه مسلمانان ترغیب ک نیمه دومِ قرن سیزدهم میلادی: امپراتوری بزرگ مغول در حال فروپاشی است. همزمان با جنگهای داخلی خانهای مغول، ویلهلم آگسبورگی راهب فرقه دومنیکن و ژوسران سارازینی شوالیه فرقه دلاوران معبد سفری دراز را به سوی قراقوروم آغاز میکنند تا به نمایندگی از سوی پاپ و شاهان صلیبی، قوبیلای قاآن خانِ بزرگ مغول را به عقد پیمان علیه مسلمانان ترغیب کنند. این دو مرد، با دو شخصیت و دو دیدگاه متضاد در مسیر جاده ابریشم با سرزمینهایی ناشناس، با مردمی بیگانه و با سنتهایی بینهایت غریب آشنا میشوند. سفری که در ابتدا آسان مینماید به ماجراجویی خطرناکی تبدیل میشود. در شرِ سمرقند با خوتلون دختر یکی از خانهای بزرگ مغول آشنا میشوند که نه تنها شکارچی و سوارکار ماهری است، بلکه دستی شفابخش دارد و به عنوان پیشگو و شَمن در طایفهاش مشهور است. جسارت و اعتماد به نفسِ فراوان خوتلون از همان نگاه اول در ویلهلم نفرت و ترس و در شوالیه سارازینی شیفتگی و احترام برمیانگیزاند. سارازینی به عبث میکوشد تا بر احساسات ممنوعه و ناممکنش مهار زند و آن دخترِ «وحشی» را فراموش کند و به بنبستی میرسد که هیچ راه نجاتی ندارد ...
