يبدأ الكاتب بشرح خريطة أزمة الإنسان مع الوقت، ومع عقارب الساعة، ومع المواعيد، ثم يقدم لمحة عن حركة البطء العالمية، ويرصد ملامحها الشائقة. لينطلق بعد ذلك عبر فصول الكتاب إلى تفاصيل تجلّيات هذه الحركة في شتّى جوانب الحياة العصرية للإنسان في القرن الحادي والعشرين: الغذاء، والعمران، وثنائية العقل والجسد، والطبّ، والجنس، والعمل، والاستجمام، وتربية الأطفال. وقد خصّص لكل جانب فصلاً خاصاً مزوّداً بعدد كبير من التجارب والمقابلات والقصص الممتعة، ما أعطى الكتاب صبغةً تطبيقية شاملة أيضاً
