كتاب لم أشتاتاً متفرقات، وضم بين دفتيه المتناقضات، وحاول أن يقيم نفسه حكماً بعيداً عن التأثيرات، إذ لم نعد اليوم نقبل مثل تلك الصورة التي جاءت من هنا وهناك، خاضعة للزمان، ولأهواء الرجال، فخلف بن حيان شخصية ليست بذات لونين، وعقلية ما كانت تحمل قط اتجاهين، فإما أن يكون تلميذ أبي عمرو بن العلاء، وزعيم مدرسته من بعده، تتلمذ على يديه الأصمعي وابن سلام، فهو صادق القلب واللسان، و كتاب لم أشتاتاً متفرقات، وضم بين دفتيه المتناقضات، وحاول أن يقيم نفسه حكماً بعيداً عن التأثيرات، إذ لم نعد اليوم نقبل مثل تلك الصورة التي جاءت من هنا وهناك، خاضعة للزمان، ولأهواء الرجال، فخلف بن حيان شخصية ليست بذات لونين، وعقلية ما كانت تحمل قط اتجاهين، فإما أن يكون تلميذ أبي عمرو بن العلاء، وزعيم مدرسته من بعده، تتلمذ على يديه الأصمعي وابن سلام، فهو صادق القلب واللسان، وإما أن يكون شعوبياً، ربيبه أبو نواس، يخادع كل جليس، ويدلس على أهل الكوفة وحماد، وفي البصرة، وفي بغداد، ذهب خلف، يطارد الخصوم، ويقف حائلاً في وجه تيار قادر على الاختلاق، تيار أهل الأخبار والقصاص، ولم يكن لهؤلاء غير الهجوم والتجريح، وساعد تشابه الأسماء، على الزج بخلف في مكان خلف، فكان خلف الأحمر البصري، أستاذ الأصمعي، مكان خلف الأحمر الكوفي، تلميذ الكسائي، فتوجه القدح والبلاء، إلى الأول بدلاً من الثاني، وحيكت حول صاحبنا الروايات، التي توجتها صياغة قصائد لدوافع، كان خلف منها بريئاً.
