بين محمد عابد الجابري وطه عبد الرحمن أكثر من نقطة تماس وبؤرة صراع، وقد بدأت بوادر الخلاف تظهر بين الرجلين، بشكل واضح وقوي، سنة 1978، بمناسبة افتتاح كلية الآداب والعلوم الإنسانية، التابعة لجامعة محمد الخامس بالرباط، سلسلة ندواتها الكبرى، بتنظيم ندوة "إبن رشد ودرسته في الغرب الإسلامي"، حيث تقدم كل واحد منهما بورقة حول فيلسوف مراكش وقرطبة، حملت منذ البداية نقاط خلاف عميقة بين الرجلين؛ فإذا كان الجابري قد رافع في مداخلته على حاجتنا المعاصرة لإبن رشد والرشدية، فإن طه عبد الرحمن لم يذخر جهداً للدفاع عن الموقف المناقض وهو عدم حاجتنا إلى إبن رشد ومدرسته، ما دام لم يكتب حرفاً من كتبه الكثيرة لنا، بل كل ما خطته يمينه من تواليف عديدة ألفه لغيرنا!
وإذا جاز لنا أن نختزل كل نقاط الصراع بين طه والجابري في نقطة توتر مركزية محددة فإننا نجازف بإمكانية اختزالها في كلمة واحدة وهي "الرشدية"، بلغة الجابري، أو "الرشدانية"، بلغة طه عبد الرحمن، ما دام موقف كل منهما من إبن رشد يعتبر مفتاحاً لفهم التناقض الجوهري بين مشروعيهما الفكريين.
تلك هي الفرضية الأساسية التي يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى فحصها وتحليلها من خلال قسمين إثنين:
اعتنى القسم الأول بدراسة تحليلية نقدية للصورة التمجيدية التي يرسمها صاحب نحن والتراث لمن يسميه بـ "فيلسوف الفردوس الإسلامي المفقود" الذي بالعثور عليه وإعادته إلينا من جديد سنعثر على مفتاح تقدمنا وتحررنا.
أما القسم الثاني فيعرض للنزعة المضادة للرشدية في الدراسات المغربية، والتي يعتبر طه عبد الرحمن زعيمها الأول بدون منازع، الذي لم يدخر جهداً في بيان لماذا لسنا في حاجة إلى ابن رشد، ولماذا لا ينبغي لنا أن نكون رشديين.
