وصف ماركوز للإنسان ذي البُعد الواحد هو تطوير لفكرة الإنسان الاقتصادي والجسماني (الإنسان الطبيعي) حيث بيَّن أن نسق الإنسان ذي البُعد الواحد هو نسـق واحديّ مغلق، ولذا فإنه يحـاول أن يفتح النسـق. وكي يفعل ذلك، كان لابد له أن يخرج من الواقع المغلق كي يقوم بتحليل وتقييم الكل الكامن المتجاوز لهذا الواقع الظاهر. وفي كتابه العقل والثورة، يجد ماركوز ضالته في فكر هيجل. لقد أصر هيجل وصف ماركوز للإنسان ذي البُعد الواحد هو تطوير لفكرة الإنسان الاقتصادي والجسماني (الإنسان الطبيعي) حيث بيَّن أن نسق الإنسان ذي البُعد الواحد هو نسـق واحديّ مغلق، ولذا فإنه يحـاول أن يفتح النسـق. وكي يفعل ذلك، كان لابد له أن يخرج من الواقع المغلق كي يقوم بتحليل وتقييم الكل الكامن المتجاوز لهذا الواقع الظاهر. وفي كتابه العقل والثورة، يجد ماركوز ضالته في فكر هيجل. لقد أصر هيجل على أن يظل الإنسان عاقلاً رشيداً قادراً على أن يتحرر مما يُسمَّى الحقائق المحيطة به (فالعقل البشري نفسه يصبح المطلق وموضع الكمون وأساس التجاوز، ومن ثم يستعيد الإنسان إنسانيته ومركزيته ومطلقيته).
