في "الإنسان ذو البعد الواحد" ينقب المؤلف عن الأسباب الكامنة في المجتمع الصناعي المعاصر والتي تقف وراء تهديد الشرق للغرب وتهديد الغرب للشرق. وهو في سعيه لتقديم نظرية نقدية عن المجتمع المعاصر، يرى ضرورة تحليل الطريفة التي يستخدم بها المجتمع (أو لا يستخدم) إمكانياته لتحسين الشرط الإنساني.
ويتركز تحليل المؤلف بشكل خاص على ميول المجتمعات المعاصرة الأكثر تقدماً، إذ أن هناك قطاعات واسعة داخل هذه المجتمعات وخارجها ما تزال فيها هذه الميول بعيدة عن البروز وهو يحاول تسليط الضوء على هذه الميول ويقدم بعض الفرضيات.
وقد لاحظ في كلامه عن المجتمع الأحادي البعد أن الحقوق والحريات التي كانت عوامل أساسية في المراحل الأولى من المجتمع الصناعي تقل أهميتها وحيويتها في مرحلة أكثر تقدماً وتفرغ من مضمونها التقليدي، كما يرى أن مجتمع التعبئة الشاملة الذي يتكون ويبرز في أكثر قطاعات الحضارة الصناعية تقدماً هو تركيب إنتاجي لمجتمع رفاه ومجتمع حرب، وإذا ما قورن بالمجتمعات التي سبقته فإنه يبدو حقاً مجتمعاً جديداً. ويذهب المؤلف إلى أن المبدأ الهادي لتخطيط وتطوير الموارد التي سيكون في وسع جميع أعضاء المجتمع، استخدامها لا توفره إلا العقلانية التكنولوجية وحدها شريطة تحريرها من عناصرها الاستغلالية.
