يتناول الكتاب الخطوات العملية لتأليف المعجم التاريخي الذي قد يستغرق إعداده حوالي قرنٍ من الزمن. وأهم هذه الخطوات: تقسيم تاريخ اللغة العربية إلى عصور (مثل العصر الجاهلي، عصر الخلفاء الراشدين والأمويين، العصر العباسي، العصر الوسيط ، العصر الحديث)، ثم اختيار المصادر الأساسية والثانوية التي تمثل جميع عصور اللغة العربية في جميع مناطقها ومختلف موضوعاتها وتخصصاتها العلمية والفنية يتناول الكتاب الخطوات العملية لتأليف المعجم التاريخي الذي قد يستغرق إعداده حوالي قرنٍ من الزمن. وأهم هذه الخطوات: تقسيم تاريخ اللغة العربية إلى عصور (مثل العصر الجاهلي، عصر الخلفاء الراشدين والأمويين، العصر العباسي، العصر الوسيط ، العصر الحديث)، ثم اختيار المصادر الأساسية والثانوية التي تمثل جميع عصور اللغة العربية في جميع مناطقها ومختلف موضوعاتها وتخصصاتها العلمية والفنية والأدبية، ثم إنشاء مكتبة مطبوعات ورقية أصلية أو مصورة يرجع إليها الباحثون والمعجميون، ثم تكوين مدوَّنة نصية حاسوبية مزودة ببرامج تحليلية دلالية وصرفية ونحوية، ثم اختيار مداخل المعجم الرئيسية والفرعية وترتيبها طبقاً لنظام معيّن، ثم كتابة موادّها المدعّمة بالشواهد وتزويد القارئ بجميع العلومات اللغوية والثقافية والتاريخية عنها، وأخيراً كتابة المقدمة التي تتناول تاريخ اللغة العربية، وتطوّر كتابتها، ومنهجية المعجم التاريخي، وكيفية استعماله، والرموز المستخدمة فيه. ويختتم المعجم بقائمة المصادر وأسماء المساهمين في إعداده من لسانيين وحاسوبيين ومعجمين ومؤثلين ومؤرخين وغيرهم.
