يعتقد كثيرون أن اللغة العربية هي الإبداع الأبعد أثراً في تاريخ العرب القديم والوسيط، وهي، لا ريب في ذلك، إحدى أهم الركائز الحضارية للعرب على الرغم من التراجع المتمادي للحضارة العربية منذ سقوط بغداد في سنة 1258 ميلادية.
وقد ظهر، حتى في ما يسمى "عصر الإنحطاط"، جهد معجمي كبير مثل لسان العرب لابن منظور، والقاموس المحيط للفيزوزأبادي، وتاج العروس للزبيدي، الأمر الذي يشير إلى مركزية اللغة في الحياة العربية.
وفي هذا الميدان المعرفي تراكم بالتدريج جهد جبار لتحديث هذه اللغة وإخراجها من الوهن الذي أصابها طوال عهود، لكنها ما برحت تعاني القصور المعجمي قياساً على اللغات العالمية الحية كالإنكليزية على سبيل المثال.
وهذا الكتاب الذي قدم له الدكتور عزمي بشارة وساهمت فيه مجوعة من الباحثين اللغويين من لبنان وسورية والمغرب وتونس وموريتانيا ومصر والأردن والسعودية.
