رُغمَ أنّ علامات الترقيم لا تشكلُ، لغاية الآن، ظاهرةً لغوية جديرة بالدراسة على نحو خاصّ إلاّ أننا لا نستطيع إنكارَ دورها على مستوى القراءة أو الكتابة؛ وتصبح المسألة أكثر أهمية عندما يتعلق الأمر بالكنولوجيا والمعالجة الآلية للغات حيث تشكل علامات الترقيم فيها عنصراً أساسياً وحاسماً.
فهي، في الواقع، تلعب دوراً رئيسياً في كافة مراحل بناء المعنى، أما بالنسبة لتكنولوجيا المعلومات والإتصالات التي تتحكم بالإنتاج الكتابي للوثائق الرقمية، فإن شكل النصّ يعتمد، إلى حدّ بعيد، على طريقة الطباعة وعلامات الترقيم.
وبالتالي، فإن معظم الأنظمة الحالية لتوصيف النصوص والوثائق تقوم أساساً على علامات الترقيم وطريقة الطباعة.
علينا، إذاً، أن نعتبر أن علامات الترقيم هي نظام مستقل ومتماسك وأنّ تاريخَها يستحق الدراسة، حيث أنها، كما كافة مكونات اللغة تتأثر بالتطور التاريخي والتغييرات التكنولوجية، ثمّ إنّ الأبحاث التي تعالج علامات الترقيم تستند إلى مدونات حقيقية ولا تتعلق بالبحث في تاريخ علامات الترقيم عن دلالتها الحالية فقط، ولكنّ الأساس هو أولاً العمل على إظهار كيفية تغيّر دلالة علامات الترقيم مع تطور اللغة، ومن جهة ثانية، البحث في كيفية تآلف علامات الترقيم مع التطورات مثل إختراع الطباعة أو ظهور التقنيات المعلوماتية.
