ولد أحمد نهاد السياف (1909-1992) في مدينة حلب في عائلة مدينية تنتمي إلى فئة الأعيان المتوسطين، وكان أحد أبرز وجوه الجيل الثاني للحركة الوطنية الذي تميز بوعيه الوطني الراديكالي العصري والدستوري، وتكون وعيه أساساً في مرحلة الانتقال من الاحتلال والتجزئة إلى الاستقلال، خلافاً لوعي الجيل الأول الذي تكونت بنيته الأساسية في المدارس النظامية العثمانية وشغل مراتب بيروقراطية وظيفية في جهاز الدولة العثماني.
تقع أوراق السياف المنشورة هذه على مستوى المدى الزمني لسرديتها بشكل أساسي في مرحلة الانتداب الفرنسي على سورية وصولاً إلى ما بعد الجلاء. ويركز القسم الأول على تجربة السياف مع إبراهيم هنانو في فترة 1926-1934، بينما يبدأ المدى الزمني للقسم الثاني في حدود العالم 1938، ويقفز زمنياً وصولاً إلى قضية سلمان المرشد وما بعدها، لكن الأوراق في الأصل كما يشير اتجاهها ومنطقها مذكرات متكاملة، تبقى منها ما تم العثور عليه وهو هذه الأوراق.
وتكمن أهمية هذه الأوراق أكاديمياً في التعبير عن تجربة الجيل الثاني في الحركة الوطنية السورية وإلى كونها إضاءة تجربة شخصية ورسمية ديناميكية في فصل من أكثر الفصول طمساً وتهرباً منه في التاريخ السوري الحديث، وهو الفصل المعقد المتعلق بـ "قضية سلمان المرشد" الذي نقل المرشد من الزعامة إلى المشنقة.
إن أحمد السياف المديني الحلبي، التلميذ المباشر لإبراهيم هنانو، هو صاحب هذه الشهادة "التاريخية الصدمة". يخترق السياف الوطني ثم الكتلوي الشاب والناضج في هذه الأوراق بشكل جذري السردية الرسمية وشبه الرسمية عن ذلك الفصل، ويعضها في مواجهة حقيقية أمام أسئلة الإنصاف في محكمة التاريخ.
