في هذا الكتاب بحث في أبي العباس محمد بن يزيد المبرد (ت 285هــ) وهو آخر المجتهدين المبدعين من نحويي البصرة، بدأت حياته واكتمل علمه في مدينة البصرة، المدينة التي نشأ النحو وترعرع وتفتح فيها، إذ استقامت أصوله وعلا هيكله على يدي الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي (ت 175هـ) شيخ سيبويه جامع علمه في "الكتاب".
وقد كان قوام هذا البحث تمهيد وثلاثة فصول، تحدث المؤلف في التمهيد بإختصار عن نشأة المبرد وأشار إلى أهمّ أعماله، وتناول الفصل الأول نحوه بالحديث عن منهجه وأصوله النحوية التي شاع فثبتت أصولاً للنحو البصري المعياري ورسمت خصائصه؛ وكان موضوع الفصل الثاني موقف المبرد من لغة الشعر بإعتبار أنّ الشعر مصدر من مصادر النحويين ثم أنّ المبرد كان ذا صلة بالشعر في بداية حياته ولما انغمس في علم النحو وتدريسه كانت له في الشعر نظرات عالم عارف بأسراره وأسرار تجاربه.
وأما الفصل الثالث فقد خصص في جهوده النقدية التي دار بعضها في تأسيس علم البلاغة وريادته في ذلك.
