جمع " توفيق الحكيم" في هذه الرواية معظم ما يتعلق بأخبار أشعب الطفيلي في كتب التراث العربي، وقام بدمجها - أو طبخها على حد وصف الحكيم نفسه- بشكل روائي بسيط غير متكلف، يُشعرك بأن الأحداث التي تضمنتها الرواية وقعت بالفعل بنفس الترتيب الذي جاءت به.
إذا بدأت بالنظر إلى غلاف الكتاب الخاص بطبعة دار الشروق ( نُشرت الرواية لأول مرة عام 1938) ستجد نفسك تضحك رُغماً عنك، فالغلاف تتصدر جمع " توفيق الحكيم" في هذه الرواية معظم ما يتعلق بأخبار أشعب الطفيلي في كتب التراث العربي، وقام بدمجها - أو طبخها على حد وصف الحكيم نفسه- بشكل روائي بسيط غير متكلف، يُشعرك بأن الأحداث التي تضمنتها الرواية وقعت بالفعل بنفس الترتيب الذي جاءت به.
إذا بدأت بالنظر إلى غلاف الكتاب الخاص بطبعة دار الشروق ( نُشرت الرواية لأول مرة عام 1938) ستجد نفسك تضحك رُغماً عنك، فالغلاف تتصدره صورة لتوفيق الحكيم وهو يُمسك بيده شطيرة وفمه ممتلئ بقطعة منها. الذي اختار هذه الصورة لتكون غلافاً لرواية عن أشعب الأكول الطفيلي كان ذكياً ولماحاً لتوظفيها في الصدارة.
هي رواية طريفة تتجول فيها بين نوادر أشعب وبنان والكندي في التراث العربي، وبين أشعار الجواري والسادة في ذلك الزمان، وستقابلك الكثير من المصطلحات العربية الأصيلة سواء في أسماء الأطعمة والمأكولات أو أسماء الأماكن والأدوات وغيرها، وستشعر بأنك في واحة جميلة تخرج إليها وتتنسم أجواءها، وسرعان ما تندمج في تلك الأجواء وتنسى - أو تتناسي- الواقع الذي تحيا فيه .
