يُعَدّ العلاّمة الدكتور عبد العزيز الدوري من أبرز مؤرِّخي زماننا الحاضر؛ فقد وضع لنا محاولات لفلسفة التاريخ العربي (الحضاري)، أو لنقل الوصول إلى فكرة شاملة تعبِّر عنه. وهو ما يمكن أن نعتبره استكمالاً لفلسفة الحضارة، وامتداداً للمدرسة الخلدونية في العصر الراهن.
ويُعَدّ البحث في فلسفة التاريخ العربي – الإسلامي، مدّة ستة عقود، من أهم انشغالات العلاّمة الدوري، فضلاً عن كونه مفكراً قومياً يؤمن بدور الأمة العربية – الإسلامية في صنع الحضارة الإنسانية وتعزيز دورها بين الأمم الأخرى. وهو يرى أن الوصول إلى فلسفة التاريخ الحضاري العربي – الإسلامي لا يتم إلا عن طريق تاريخ التأريخ أو تحقيب التاريخ العربي – الإسلامي، لكي يتمكن من الوصول إلى فكرة (أو فلسفة) لهذا التاريخ تعبّر عن هويته الثقافية وخصوصيته الحضارية.
لقد حاولت المؤلِّفة أن تصل إلى معظم آراء الدوري وقراءاته لمنطق التاريخ العربي – الإسلامي (أو كما يسمّيه ابن خلدون بعلم العمران/الحضري) عبر مؤلفاته ودراساته، لا سيما ذات الصلة بفلسفة التاريخ والحضارة. إلى جانب المقابلات الفكرية التي أُجريت معه طوال نصف قرن بالصحف والمجلات الفكرية.
وتخلص الباحثة إلى القول: إن العلاّمة الدوري، في منظوره الحضاري – المعاصر، إنما يُقيم دعائم منظوره الفلسفي على قواعد جدلية – عضوية، أساسها فكرة القومية والدين، وركائزها: جدل الأجيال، ممثلاً الأصالة والمعاصرة، وجدل النهضة والانحطاط، وجدل الذات والآخر. محتفظاً له بموقف متميّز بين الأجوبة العربية لموضوع النهضة – الدينية – والليبرالية والشيوعية والقومية؛ خرج منها برؤية تكاملية معاصرة، تنتقد، وتتجاوز إلى حيث يجب أن تكون النهضة المنشودة.
