يبدأ الكتاب بتعريف معنى القصيدة الغنائية، ثم يتناول - كما هو المعتاد - حالة الشعر قبل البارودي وحالته أثناء عصر النهضة ومرحلة التقليد والإحياء ثم مرحلة الانطلاق والابتكار، ويتحدث مطولا عن تجديد شوقي وحافظ ومطران في القصيدة العربية وفي الوصف والخيال والشعر الوجداني ويطيل خاصة عند ذكر شوقي ومطران، ثم ينتقل إلى جماعة الديوان ويتناول جوانب شعر العقاد والمازني وعبد الرحمن شكري يبدأ الكتاب بتعريف معنى القصيدة الغنائية، ثم يتناول - كما هو المعتاد - حالة الشعر قبل البارودي وحالته أثناء عصر النهضة ومرحلة التقليد والإحياء ثم مرحلة الانطلاق والابتكار، ويتحدث مطولا عن تجديد شوقي وحافظ ومطران في القصيدة العربية وفي الوصف والخيال والشعر الوجداني ويطيل خاصة عند ذكر شوقي ومطران، ثم ينتقل إلى جماعة الديوان ويتناول جوانب شعر العقاد والمازني وعبد الرحمن شكري وآخرين، ثم يتحدث عن التجديد في الاوزان والقوافي ومفهوم الشعر المرسل، تبدأ فصول أدب المهجر وموضوعاته وأعلامه، ثم يأخذ في تناول التجديد في القصيدة الغنائية عند مدرسة أبولو وأعلامها.
