ربما لا يكون من الخطأ القول بأن الشعر العربي في العصر الحديث قد مرت به ظروف، وحفزت إليه دوافع، ونزلت به نوازل، جعلت منه فناً يفوق ما قيل من شعر في العصور السابقة عدد قصائد ودواوين وتنوع فنون، وأساليب تجديد، وصور تعبير عن النفس والمجتمع والحياة.
نقول هذا على الرغم من أن هذا العصر لم يكن كله خيراً على البلاد العربية والإسلامية، بل كان فيه شر كثير تمثل بذلك الطارئ البغيض المتمثل بالإستدمار أو الإستخراب الذي اصطلح على تسميته خطأ بـ (الإستعمار)، ذلك الطارئ الذي ألحق البلاد العربية والإسلامية في فلكه السياسي والإقتصادي، وعمل جاهداً - ويعمل بإستمرار - على إلحاقه ثقافياً وحضارياً بثقافته وحضارته، بكل ما يعني هذا من ذوبان معالم الإنسان والحياة والتاريخ لإنسان المنطقة عموماً.
وهذه الدراسة حاولت أن ترصد تجاوب الشعر مع أصداء ذلك الصراع الدامي بين الشرق العربي والإسلامي، وبين الغرب المتحفز الشره إلى إمتلاك مناطق النفوذ والهيمنة على العالم، وكان لذلك الصراع أوجه متعددة عينت بها فصول الباب الأول من الدراسة، وهي الصراع العسكري والسياسي، والإجتماعي والثقافي.
على أن الدراسة لم تكن تغفل رصد الظواهر الفنية للشعر في تلك المرحلة الأولى من العصر الحديث، وهي التي سميت بالمرحلة الإحيائية أو النهضة أو البعث، أو الإتباعية، أو المحافظة إلى غير هذا من المسميات التي تعني أن روحاً جديدة بدأت تدب في روح الشعر بعد مرحلة ضعف العصر العثماني السابق وهذا يشمل مضامين الشعر وهمومه، كما يشمل أدواته الفنية التي اتجهت إلى إستلهام القصيدة العربية القديمة في عصور إزدهارها خاصة.
