لا تسعى هذه الدراسة لرصد تاريخ الشعر العراقي، أو الاهتمام بالسير الذاتية للشعراء وتفاصيل حياتهم كالذي انصبت عليه معظم دراسات الباحثين العراقيين وغيرهم ممن وفوا هذا الجانب حقه بدراستهم الرائدة، وإنما كانت المحاولة الرئيسية التي تدور حولها هذه الرسالة هي دراسة تطور مشاكل القصيدة وصعوبات العمل الفني، وما طرأ على نسيج الشعر، من خلال تتبع يتمشى مع حركة الوعي وتطورات الأحداث والمؤثرات والمتغيرات الاجتماعية والفكرية والسياسية.
وإذا كانت هذه الدراسة تحاول الإجابة عن مجموعة من الأسئلة تثير قضايا التجديد والتطور والاصالة والعقم والاضطراب والسلبيات في قصيدة الشاعر العراقي الحديث، فإنه من غير المنطقي أن تظل هذه الإجابات أسيرة البيئة العراقية وظروفها فحسب، بل حاولت -كلما كان ذلك ضرورياً- أن تستشرف ساحة الشعر العربي ولا سيما في مصر والمهاجر، وأن ترسم الخطوط البارزة لحركة التجديد التي ظلت مطروحة فيها سنوات عديدة وكان تأثيرها في قصيدة الشاعر العراقي واضحاً.
معروفة جداً العلاقة الحميمة للشعر بالعرب، ومعروف معها أن الشعر ما يزال يحتل مكانة خاصة في دائرة الثقافة والفن في العراق. ولذا فقد كان طبيعياً أن يحظى هذا الفن بالدراسة والنقد والمتابعة. وبالفعل تعددت الدراسات في ذلك وتنوعت مداخلها، لكن مما يؤخذ على اتجاهاتها بشكل عام إنها قد تركزت على جوانب معينة بالذات منها وأعطتها من اهتمامها الكثير من دون جوانب أخرى. فالشعر الحر في العراق مثلاً قد حظي باهتمام الدارسين لكن هؤلاء الدارسين لم يلتفتوا بشكل كاف إلى خلفية هذا الشعر قبل 1947، كما لم يلتفتوا إلى مشاكل الأديب في تعامله مع القصيدة التقليدية. ومن هنا اهتمّ هذا الكتاب بدراسة الشعر العراقي الحديث، ورصد حركة القصيدة ورؤية الفنان وتطور النسيج في الاتجاهين الرئيسيين: الكلاسيكي والرومانسي، ليتجاوز بذلك هذا المأخذ الرئيس.
