يهدف العمل إلى إعادة رسم مسار إحدى الجماعات (كبار التجار) وتحليل الشبكات العلائقية التي يح يتناول الكتاب المستمد من أطروحة الدكتوراةالتي نالتها المؤلفة من "مدرسة الدراسات العليا للعلوم الإجتماعية" بباريس، كيفات تأسيس تعزيز ونقل الثروات في مصر في الفترة بين عامي 1780-1830 بالإستناد على توثيق غير مسبوق لحجج المحاكم العثمانية ووثائق الدولة المصرية فى الفترة بين عامي 1805-1848.

عملت باسكال غزالة على دراسة محتوى الفئات الإجتماعية، التي أفادت في تقدير المجتمع الحضري في مصر في العصر العثماني لاسيما الأسرة والعسكر والتجار في عصور وسياقات مختلفة وذلك من خلال البحث في العلاقات المادية والقانونية بين الأفراد مما مكنها من الكشف عن كيفيات الاستخدامات المادية للملكية في الوسط الحضري.
