يملأ هذا الكتاب فراغاً كبيراً في المكتبة العربية والتاريخ العربي المعاصر للشرق الأوسط. ويسلَّط الضوء على ما يدعوه المؤلف (الشرق في زمن التحولات)، فيصف جملة الأزمات والانقلابات المتقاطعة منذ أواخر الحرب العالمية الثانية حتى شهر آب/أغسطس 1957.
جاك بونوا ميشان كاتب ومؤرّخ وصحفي فرنسي. اتّجه في أواخر حياته إلى كتابة تاريخ العالم العربي، ومنه تدوين تاريخ آل سعود. فأصدر كتباً عدّة في هذا الاتجاه، منها (ميلاد مملكة أو ابن سعود) و (الملك فيصل)؛
