جمع المحقق في هذا الكتاب من شعر يزيد بن معاوية ما كان من نظمة وما نسب إليه مرفقاً ذلك بترجمة لسيرة الخليفة يزيد ثاني خلفاء بني أمية تحدث المحقق من خلالها عن نسبه وإيثار أبيه له وخصاله وما جاء في مبايعته وعن شخصيته كخليفة، ثم تناول بعد ذلك الفتن التي دفعت في عهده ابتداءً من مقتل الحسين ثم وقعة الحرَّة، وحصار مكة وتدبير الكعبة. وأردف المحقق ذلك بديوان يزيد ومن ثم أورد ما كان له صلة بديوانه وما نسب إليه ولغيره ملحقاً ذلك بترجمة ليزيد كما جاءت في بعض كتب الأدب والتراجم.
