يتمثل محور هذا الكتاب ومدار بحثه المركزي في استجلاء موقف "الأنطولوجيا التاريخية" التي جاء بها الفيلسوف الفرنسي الأشهر: ميشيل فوكو، من مسائل التنوير والحداثة وما بعد الحداثة، استجلاء نقدياً فاحصاً، وكذلك مواقف بعض التيارات الفلسفية المعاصرة من هذه الأنطولوجيا التاريخية.
ولهذا الغرض، عمد المؤلف في البداية إلى إجراء تحليل نقدي، عميق ومسهب، لمفاهيم التنوير والحداثة وما بعد الحداثة، من الزاويتين التاريخية والفلسفية وكلتيهما، ومن ثم قدّم دراسة نموذجية لذلك من خلال تحليل السيرة التاريخية والفلسفية للأنطولوجيا التاريخية، وأجرى في الأخير مقارنة لطروحاتها الجديد والجريئة بجملة من التيارات الفلسفية الحديثة والمعاصرة ممثلة بأسماء مفكرين بارزين من أمثال: ديكارت، كانط، نيتشه، ليوتار، توران، كارل بوبر، ولا سيما مع مدرسة فرانكفورت ممثّلة بأبرز فلاسفتها وأقطابها، هابرماس، هوركهايمر وأدورنو.
