تتحدث هذه الرواية عن اليابان في الفترة التي سبقت الحرب العالمية الثانية ومهدت لها, ثم فترة الحرب, ثم الإنهيار وما تلاه.
إنها تروي لنا تاريخ صعود الفاشية اليابانية وسقوطها من خلال انعكاس هذا التاريخ في التكوين الشخصي والسيكولوجي لشخوص الرواية وبالتالي في تحديد قيمهم وسلوكهم ومصائرهم.
إن المشهد الذي يفتتح به بطل الرواية تاريخه الوجداني يصور طفلاً لحظة مولده وهو يُغسَل بعد الول تتحدث هذه الرواية عن اليابان في الفترة التي سبقت الحرب العالمية الثانية ومهدت لها, ثم فترة الحرب, ثم الإنهيار وما تلاه.
إنها تروي لنا تاريخ صعود الفاشية اليابانية وسقوطها من خلال انعكاس هذا التاريخ في التكوين الشخصي والسيكولوجي لشخوص الرواية وبالتالي في تحديد قيمهم وسلوكهم ومصائرهم.
