كان الرصافي حاضراً في ضمير عصره، صاحبه في أزماته الوجدانية والسياسية والأخلاقية، كما أنه ناهض فيه أصنام الرأي العام والمنتفعين من الدين ومن تكريس التقاليد، وعرج على كل حالة من أحوال الحياة. وامتاز شعره بنداوة الحس والمعاناة والصورة المكثفة التي تنثال له في كل حين، وفي ذلك الزحف اللفظي والحشد الصوري وفي إلمامه بموضوعه من كل جانب واستنفاده لغاية القول فيه بالنسبة إلى سوية الثقافة في العصر. لقد جعل الرصافي في شعره رسالة، واحترص عليه غاية الاحتراص، وضن بها وتماسك عليه. فهو لم يكن ينظمه نظم المترف، كما أنه لم يمتدح فيه المدح المأثور استدراراً لعطف ونوالاً لحظوة، فأتى شعره ليمثل تمدد الشعر على الواقع والحاجة فكان نوعاً من تصوف الكرامة الإنسانية التي لا تتنازل تحت وطأة القسر والإكراه.
