شرعت فريضة الجمعة لحكمة ظاهرة لا تخفى على المفكر المتأمل فهي لبست فريضة عادية, ولكنها بمثابة عيد أسبوعي يلتقي فيه المسلمون للتعارف وتوثيق أواصر المودة بينهم, والتعاون على ما فيه الخير, كما فرضت بصورة دورية كل أسبوع لعرض مشكلات المجتمع والعمل على حلها وشحذ الهمم. وقد كان اهتمامنا بهذه الوسيلة لا يقل عن الاهتمام بوسائل الاتصال الجماهيرية الأخرى بل قد يفوقها وانطلاقًا من هذه الحقيقة حفل هذا العمل العلمي باستكشاف طبيعة خطبة الجمعة وأصولها وبنائها الفني وجوانب القوة الكامنة فيها ونوعية الجماهير التي تتعرض لها ومهارات الاتصال اللازمة لها وكيفية توظيف هذه الوسيلة لبناء الإنسان المسلم بناء عقليًا ووجدانيًا سليمًا ثم دراسة أثرها على اتجاهات الجماهير وآرائهم وانعكاسات ذلك على سلوكهم لاستخلاص النتائج, ومعرفة الحقائق, ووضع الخطط العلمية لتحقيق أكبر استفادة ممكنة منها لإصلاح الدين والدنيا.
وتشتمل هذه الدراسة على بابين: يضم الباب الأول منها خمسة فصول تشكل الإطار الفكري العام لموضوع الدراسة وهي: المفهوم العلمي للخطابة, الخطابة الدينية, الأسس العلمية والعملية التي تحقق لهذه الوسيلة الفاعلية والتأثير, القائم بالاتصال وهو خطيب الجمعة, الخصائص التي ينفرد بها جمهور الخطبة وتميزهم عن جماهير وسائل الاتصال الأخرى, أما الباب الثاني فقد اشتمل على الدراسة التجريبية التي تم إجراؤها بهدف قياس تأثير الخطبة على الجماهير المستقبلة من خلال ثلاثة فصول وهي: خطة البحث وخطوات الدراسة والمنهج, قياس مكانة الخطبة بين الجماهير المتلقية, قياس أثر الخطبة على الجماهير في المساجد.
