تنصب الدراسة على جمهورية مصر العربية، كحالة كاشفة للتحولات المذكورة، وفق أحدث البيانات ال يتضمن الكتاب أطروحة الدكتوراه المقدمة من المؤلف في تخصص جغرافيا السكان والجغرافيا البشرية، ويدور حول قضية أساسية من بين القضايا الكبرى التي شغلت الفكر العربي خلال نصف القرن الأخير، وهي التحولات الديموغرافية الناشئة عن الهجرة الداخلية في الأقطار العربية، وخاصة هجرة سكان الريف إلى الحضر.
تنصب الدراسة على جمهورية مصر العربية، كحالة كاشفة للتحولات المذكورة، وفق أحدث البيانات المستمدة من التعداد السكاني لعام 2006، وتخلص إلى أن أكبر موجات الهجرة الداخلية هي تلك التي أعقبت ثورة 23 تموز/يوليو 1952 واستمرت بقوة دفعها حتى عام 1966، ثم عام 1973، كأثر للتنمية الشاملة التي حققتها الثورة اقتصادياً واجتماعياً، وتسببت في نشأة تيارات قوية للهجرة صوب المناطق الصناعية الجديدة والمراكز الحضرية المتوسطة ومناطق التوسع الزراعي وموقع إقامة السد العالي.. وقد أدت الهجرة الداخلية إلى ارتفاع نسبة سكان الحضر من نحو 20 بالمئة أوائل القرن العشرين إلى نحو 45 بالمئة في منتصف السبعينيات.
نلحظ في هذا الكتاب بحثاً متخصصاً، بالغ الأهمية والفائدة، لحجم ومعدلات الهجرة الداخلية، ولأنماط الهجرة، وخصائص المهاجرين، والعوامل المؤثرة في الهجرة الداخلية، والآثار المترتبة عليها، ومشاكل المهاجرين، وسياسات الهجرة الداخلية، ومستقبل هذه الهجرة.
