Undset was born in Kalundborg, Denmark, but her family moved to Norway when she was two-years-old. In 1924, she converted to Catholicism and became a lay Dominican. She fled Norway in 1940 because of her opposition to Nazi Germany and the German occupation, but returned after the end of World War II in 1945.

ولدت سيغريد اوندست (1882 - 1949) في كالدوندبورغ. وحين بلغت السنتين من عمرها انتقلت اسرتها الى النرويج واستقرت في كريستيانيا (المعروفة الان باسم اوسلو). وبعد وفاة والدها في عام 1893. تخلت عن طموحها في ان تصبح رسامة، وحين اصبحت في السادسة عشرة بدأت بالعمل في احد المكاتب.
اعاد الناشر لها اولى مخطوطاتها، رواية تاريخية، حوالي عام 1905 مع العبارات التالية:"لا تحاولي ابدا كتابة رو ولدت سيغريد اوندست (1882 - 1949) في كالدوندبورغ. وحين بلغت السنتين من عمرها انتقلت اسرتها الى النرويج واستقرت في كريستيانيا (المعروفة الان باسم اوسلو). وبعد وفاة والدها في عام 1893. تخلت عن طموحها في ان تصبح رسامة، وحين اصبحت في السادسة عشرة بدأت بالعمل في احد المكاتب.
اعاد الناشر لها اولى مخطوطاتها، رواية تاريخية، حوالي عام 1905 مع العبارات التالية:"لا تحاولي ابدا كتابة رواية تاريخية مرة اخرى. لست قادرة على هذا النوع من الكتابة. قد تحاولين كتابة شيء معاصر. ولا يمكن لك ان تعرفي ما قد يحدث". في عام 1907. كان اول ظهور لها مع رواية "السيدة مارتا اولي". ولكن الفتح الحقيقي لها جاء مع رواية جني 1911.
انتاج سيغريد اوندست غني ومتنوع. ويمتد من الروايات المعاصرة الى الروايات القروسطية العظيمة والقصص القصيرة والمقالات وحكايات السفر.
"كريستين لافرانسداتر" هي قمة عطائها وهذه الثلاثية هي التي كانت السبب في منحها جائزة نوبل للآداب في عام (1928).
