الأشعار الشعبية اللبنانية أو الزجل، هي متنفس كل شاعر يريد التعبير عن أحاسيسه بلفتة العامية، إنها لسان البهجة في الأفراح والمجد في المسيرات والتعزية في المآتم، وقلما تخلو مناسبة من هذه الأشعار التي تضفي عليها وشاحاً من الجمال والروعة، ومما لا شاك فيه، أن هذا النوع من الشعر مطبوع، غالباً بطابع العفوية والبساطة لأن معظم شعرائه يعتمدون على موهبتهم وقريحتهم وتراثهم اللبناني الذي يبقي المدرسة الأولى التي تتلمذ فيها معظم الشعراء الشعبيين. وقد وجد المؤلف "أنطوان عكاري" أن الكثير من الراغبين في كتابة الشعر، يجهلون أصوله وأوزانه وأنواعه، فعمد إلى وضع كتابه هذا الذي ليس سوى دراسة بسيطة لأهم الفنون الشعرية المعتمدة في هذه الأيام، مع بعض النماذج التي استساغها من دواوين شعراء الزجل حيناً، ومن ذاكرته الشخصية حيناً آخر، وقد خصص لكل نوع من الأنواع الزجلية باباً خاصاً به، فثمة باب للمعنى، وآخر للقرادي، وثالث للموشح، ورابع للقصيدة، وخامس للبغدادي وسادس للشروقي وهكذا، أما هدف الذي ابتغاه المؤلف من هذه الدراسة هو لفت نظر الباحثين إلى ناحية مهمة في التراث الشعبي، وتقديم خدمة جليلة للتراث الوطني الشعبي وللمكتبة العربية.
