يجمع هذا الكتاب، بفصوله الخمسة عشر، إضافة إلى جلسة الحوار المفتوح، وقائع الندوة الفكرية الكبرى التي عقدها مركز دراسات الوحدة العربية تحت عنوان: من أجل الوحدة العربية – رؤية للمستقبل، في بيروت، بتاريخ 22-25 شباط/فبراير 2009. تتناول بحوث الندوة، وما اتصل بها من تعقيبات ونقاشات، موضوع الوحدة من جديد، في ضوء متغيّرات السياسة والفكر؛ أي في ضوء الحقائق الجديدة التي طرأت على المشهد السياسي: العالمي والإقليمي والعربي، عقب عقدين على انعقاد ندوة صنعاء، الوحدة العربية: تجاربها وتوقعاتها، في صيف العام 1988، وفي ضوء التراكم الفكري المتحقق في مجال مقاربة مسألة الوحدة، في العشرين عاماً تلك؛ فخلال تلك السنوات، كان يزدهر بعض التفكير النقدي في التراث القومي العربي المعاصر المتصل بمسألة الوحدة العربية. فبعد أن أُشبعت تجربة الوحدة المصرية- السورية درساً وتقييماً ونقداً، كانت أفكار جديدة حول جدلية القومي /القطري، والاندماج /الاتحاد والتوحيد / الديمقراطية في الوعي القومي الكلاسيكي، تتبلور في تلك المطالعات النقدية الجديدة التي انطلقت منذ نهايات الثمانينيات. ومع أنه يتعذر القول، في هذا السياق، إن رؤية جديدة كاملة لمسألة الوحدة العربية تكوّنت، أو اتّسع نطاق الآخذين بها في هذه الغضون، أو أن شكلاً ما من الإجماع انعقد بين النخب على أساساتها النظرية، فلا يصعب على المرء أن يلاحظ تزايداً في النَّفَس النقدي لدى المثقفين في أفكارهم وأحاديثهم حول مسألة الوحدة. وفي الظن أن في الظاهرة هذه علامة عافية على يقظة الوعي العربي الوحدوي وهويته وحسّه التاريخي.
