قد يبدو مسار تغير الخصوبة في فلسطين وإسرائيل في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين أمراً قليل الأهمية في تاريخ التحول الديموغرافي، حيث لا يمثل سكان فلسطين وإسرائيل البالغ عددهم مجتمعين 8.9 ملايين نسمة إلا سدساً من 1% من سكان العالم. لكن التاريخ السياسي الاستثنائي لهاتين الجماعتين السكانيتين، والذي أدت فيه الديموغرافيا دوراً رئيسيا لكلا الجانبين في عملية بناء الدولة، يسلط ضوءاً معيناً على البعد السياسي للتغير في الخصوبة، وهو موضوع تتجاوز أهميته حدود هذه القطعة الصغيرة من الأرض. وتعد هذه المنطقة على صغرها (26,351 كم2) فريدة لكونها تجمع نقيضين متجاورين من حيث الخصوبة السكانية؛ فمن جهة نرى أن الزيادة السكانية لا تكاد تذكر بين اليهود المولودين في أوروبا وعرب إسرائيل المسيحيين (2.13) و(2.10) على التوالي في الفترة (1992-1996)، بينما نرى في الجهة الأخرى أعلى معدل خصوبة مسجل في عالمنا اليوم بين الفلسطينيين في قطاع غزة (7.73 في الفترة 1991-1995). وتذهب الدراسة إلى أن هذه التناقضات الصارخة في الخصوبة متلازمة مع حالة الحرب الطويلة بين الفلسطينيين العرب واليهود، والتي بدأت في أعقاب تصريح بلفور عام 1917 وامتدت إلى وقتنا الحاضر.
