يبدو الإسلام ، عند النظر إليه من شمال البحر المتوسط مهيمناً بلا منازع على مجتمعات جنوب البحر. ولكن، هل يرجع التجانس الواضح إلى ليل الأزمنة؟ لقد دامت عملية إقرار السلام في الشرق العربي تسعة قرون. ولم يكن في ذلك الزمن، بالمرة، زمن إكراه وأعمال عنف متصلة ، فهنا وهناك، تسنى للمسيحية واليهودية البقاء، بل الازدهار، أكثر من مرة. وقد ترافقت عمليات تسارع اضمحلال الجماعات المسيحية المحلية مع غزوات أوروبا المسيحية. ووجدت كل مواجهة امتداداً لها في عودة الأصولية الإسلامية: تطهير الموحدين والانتصارات الأولى للاسترداد الإسباني، التشدد المملوكي والحروب الصليبية، نزعة الجامعة الإسلامية التي روج لها السلطان عبد الحميد الثاني والإذلالات التي تعرضت لها الإمبراطور العثمانية في المغرب والبلقان، الصعود الحالي لأصولية إسلامية جديدة وإنشاء إسرائيل. وجميع هذه الاندفاعات لتشدد الدولة والمجتمع تترافق مع انكفاء للأقليات. على أن فترة طويلة، هي القرون العثمانية الأربعة، تشهد وثبة للأقليات في إثر الاضمحلال، في تركيا والشرق العربي، فهل يقدم تاريخ ذلك التعايش الطائفي علامات لتخيل المستقبل؟
