إنهما تتشاركان تاريخاً وثقافة ولغة، وتتشاركان فكراً، إلى حد ما. ومع ذلك يظل البلدان عدوين خاضا حروباً عدة، ويواجهان قضايا جغرافية لا يمكن حلها على ما يبدو. كما أنهما يتعايشان وسط خلاف حول جبهات عدة. وقد كانت هناك محاولات عديدة لبناء علاقات بينهما ولكنها أخفقت جميعاً. ومع ذلك، ثمة سبب يدعو للتفاؤل لأن هذه القضايا الوجودية لم تقضِ على القواسم المشتركة بين الطرفين. في الحقيقة هناك أسس مشتركة كافية، بالمعنيين المجازي والحرفي على حد سواء، تشير إلى أن العلاقات الودية بين البلدين ممكنة بكل تأكيد. ويمكن اقتناص الفرص المتوافرة للبناء على مصالح مشتركة مثل الرياضة، والثقافة، والتجارة، والأيديولوجيا، لتؤمّن في نهاية المطاف مستقبلاً أفضل للبلدين وللإقليم كله. إن الهدف من هذه المحاضرة هو إبراز كيف أن هذه العوامل المشتركة، من بين عديد من نقاط الخلاف، تستطيع أن تكون - بل ويجب اعتبارها - بمنزلة نور في علاقة حالكة ليس لها مبرر. وهذا لا يعني أن الخلاف بين الطرفين ليس حقيقياً، بل إنه يمكننا القول مجازاً من الناحية المؤسسية والسياسية والاقتصادية إن بين البلدين أميالاً من التباعد، حتى لو كانا متشاركين في أميال وأميال من الفضاء الحر. لقد ظلت الهند وباكستان منذ تأسيسهما دولتين مستقلتين عالقتين في مأزق الخصومة لعدة أسباب.
