لم يعد بُعد القارة الأسترالية جغرافياً حاجزاً يعرقل تطوير الصلات الاستراتيجية والتجارية المهمة بين أستراليا والدول الصديقة في الشرق الأوسط. فدور أستراليا المتزايد الأهمية في عمليات حفظ السلام والعمليات الإنسانية، وجلّها في الشرق الأوسط، أضاف دينامية جديدة أيضاً إلى تطوير ميادين التعاون التي تعكس العلاقة المتقلّبة بين كانبيرا وبين الحكومات العربية، وذلك مع اكتساب مسائل إمدادات الطاقة، والأمن القومي، وفرص التجارة والسياحة المتزايدة المزيد من الزخم. لتقديم نظرة عامة معمقة تتناول تاريخ هذه العلاقة، وتستكشف التطورات السياسية الحالية والفرص الاقتصادية التي سيتم جنيها من العلاقات بين أستراليا والعالم العربي، عقد مركز الإمارات للدراسات والبحوث الاستراتيجية ندوة بعنوان "أستراليا والعالم العربي"، في الفترة 17?18 كانون الأول/ديسمبر 2008 في أبوظبي، واستضاف فيها كوكبة من الخبراء المتميزين من شتى الميادين الأكاديمية، والسياسية والتجارية. ضم هذا الكتاب بين دفتيه مجموعة قيّمة من الأوراق التي تم طرحها في الندوة، ومن خلالها نتعرف على الكيفية التي تطوّرت بها العلاقات بين أستراليا والعالم العربي؛ ومواضع تلاقي مصالحهما المشتركة وتباعدها؛ وصناعة التبادل الثقافي عبر التعليم والسياحة المتنامية؛ واندماج المسلمين في المجتمع الأسترالي وإسهامهم في تعددية البلاد الثقافية؛ والجهاز الأمني الجديد الذي يتطور استراتيجياً وعسكرياً بين أستراليا، ونيوزيلندا، وشتى الدول العربية؛ ودور أستراليا التاريخي وأسلوبها فيما يتعلق بمسألة الصراع الفلسطيني-الإسرائيلي الجدلية.
