كتاب سيميائية اللغة الذي بين يدينا هو ترجمة لكتاب «LA SEMIOTIQUE DU LANGUAGE» لمؤلفة "جوزيف كورتيس" الذي يضم خمسة أقسام يتناول فيها العلامات واللغات في القسمين الأولين ثم الدراسة السردية والتنظيم الدلالي للتلفظ في الأقسام الثلاثة الأخيرة. توخّى كورتيس من خلال (سيميائية اللغة) القيام بمسح شامل استهلّه بطرح إشكاليات عامّة بشأن مفهوم الموضوع السيميائي قصد التأسيس له بإبراز حدود المقاربة السيميائية التي تتعدّى اللغات الطبيعيّة إلى علوم اللسان، موضّحا أن الدلالة لا تكتمل إلاّ بركنين هما الدال والمدلول ويشكّل مستوى الدوال مستوى التعبير كما يشكّل مستوى المدلولات مستوى المضمون، وأنّ العلاقة بين الدال والمدلول تقوم على الاعتباطيّة إذ لا توحي الدوال بمدلولاتها بشكل تلقائي وطبيعي. كما أشار إلى جميع ضوابط التواصل التي تأتي على شكل علامات إيقونية وإلى عناصر التواصل الشميّة والذوقيّة وكذا العناصر الحركيّة واللمسيّة والعلامات الإشاريّة والإيمائيّة كما أنّه لا يستثني الشعور أو الأحاسيس الإنسانية التي حتّى وإن تعذّر نقلها في كلمات فهي تبقى متعلّقة باللغة وبالوصف السيميائي، فالتواصل شاملا اللغة المكتوبة والمنطوقة والموسيقى والفنون التشكيليّة والمسرح والرقص، أي أنّ التواصل يشمل، عمليّا، كلّ السلوك الإنساني.
